Sheltered housing scheme helps resident’s family raise
money for Leukaemia
2 March 2005
Residents of a sheltered housing scheme in Wincanton have been helping a fellow resident and her family raise money for the Children with Leukaemia charity. The son and grandson of Vera Taylor, a resident of Balsam Close Sheltered Housing Scheme, ran the New York Marathon in order to raise the money.
Steve Lafferty, who is Vera Taylor’s son and Matthew Lafferty, Vera Taylor’s Grandson took on the challenge of the 2004 marathon in ‘the city that never sleeps.’ Steve and Matthew Lafferty successfully completed the course and raised a total of £1800.
The residents have helped raise money by not only sponsoring Mrs Taylor’s son and grandson but also by holding a coffee morning of which the proceeds have also been given to the Children with Leukaemia charity. In total they have raised £657. Pam Butt, a resident of Balsam Close sheltered housing scheme presented the cheque to Steve Lafferty, who received the cheque on behalf of the CWL charity.
The Children with Leukaemia charity has become the leading charity dedicated exclusively to the conquest of childhood leukaemia through pioneering research, new treatments and providing support to leukaemic children and their families. Leukaemia is cancer of the blood. It is not hereditary. You cannot catch it. Yet it kills more of our children than any other disease and it is on the increase.
