Tenants of South Somerset Homes awarded for
their beautiful gardens

(Chard, Crewkerne, Ilminster and surrounding villages)
16 October 2006

South Somerset Homes recently awarded their tenants for keeping such beautiful colourful gardens. This is an annual event, which is open to all tenants of South Somerset Homes.

This year’s competition attracted over 100 entries in the following categories:

Best Front Garden, Best Back Garden, Best Container Garden / Hanging Basket Garden, Best Theme / Feature Garden, Best Vegetable Garden, Best Road / Sheltered Scheme Garden and Children’s Chance and Colouring Competition.

Debbie Moseley, Open Spaces Officer at SSDC was the judge and commented, “I thought that it was wonderful how much thought and energy had been put into all of the gardens entered. They all looked splendid and made choosing a winner very difficult.”

A presentation ceremony for all entrants and prize winners took place recently at Muchelney House Extra Care sheltered housing scheme in Ilminster.

The winners are as follows:

Best Front Garden
1st Ron Holt, Misterton
2nd Brian & Margaret Bird, Ilminster
3rd Margaret Trott, lminster

Best Back Garden
1st Geoffrey & Josephine Beck, Iminster
2nd Ron Holt, Misterton
3rd Mary Thorne, Horton

Best Container Garden
1st Christine Sutton, Ilminster
2nd Suzanne Gill, Ilminster
3rd Ron Holt, Misterton

Best Theme Garden
1st Margaret Mikanowicz, Ilminster
2nd Ron Holt, Misterton (Blue)
3rd Mary Thorne, Horton (Gnomes & Snow White)

Best Feature Garden
1st Ron Holt, Misterton
2nd Mary Thorne, Horton
3rd Margaret Hobbs (Horton) (The Bird Garden)

Best Vegetable Garden
1st Margaret Hobbs (Highly Commended)

Best Road/Scheme Garden
1st Turnpike Green, Misterton
2nd Riverside , Horton

Children's Chance
1st Shane, Amber, Jarad & Joshua Gill, Ilminster

Overall Winner
Ron Holt, Misterton

At the 2004 Garden Competition award ceremony June Payne donated the cup in memory of her late husband Gerald Payne who was a keen gardener. This is the third time this cup has been presented and it will be held by the winner for one year.

Andrew Bendell, Head of Housing Management at South Somerset Homes said, “Many of our tenants take great pride in their gardens and these awards aim to give them some recognition for their hard work in keeping their gardens so beautiful.”
