MP David Laws opens new garden and patio at sheltered scheme
2 September 2005

MP David Laws visited Sherlands Sheltered Housing Scheme in Merriott to officially open their new garden and patio area. Sherlands Sheltered Housing Scheme, which is owned and managed by South Somerset Homes, hosted a cream tea and champagne party to celebrate the official opening of their new garden.

The project was approved by the Area West Partnership and funded by South Somerset Homes. The work was carried out by the Horticultural Department at South Somerset District Council through a partnering contract.

The garden now has new shrubs, plants, pagodas and a new patio area with new patio furniture. The patio furniture was donated to the scheme by one of resident’s family who sadly passed away shortly before the garden was completed.

As well as the residents from the scheme, residents from two nearby schemes in Merriott and Misterton also attended the party as well as the local vicar, parish councillors and other members of the local community. Over 200 guests attended the party and later in the afternoon the local majorettes, the Merriott Majorettes, entertained them.

Dawn Turnbull, Scheme Manager at Sherlands said, “The residents are absolutely delighted and are looking forward to many more cream teas and champagne afternoons in the sunshine. I would like to say thank you to everyone that has been involved with the project, we are absolutely thrilled.”
