South Somerset Homes’ resident runner up for Golden Learner Award

Mary Kennedy, a resident at the Millbrook Gardens sheltered scheme in Castle Cary, which is owned and managed by South Somerset Homes, has been awarded runner up at the Champion of Learners – Golden Learner Award. Mary who is 92 ¼ started a 'Computers without Fear' course run in partnership with Yeovil College in September 2005 at Catherine’s Close sheltered scheme in Castle Cary.

After completing this course Mary continued her learning through outreach learning and completed the 'Introduction to Computers' course and to celebrate bought herself a laptop.

Barbara Griffiths, the tutor from Yeovil College nominated Mary for the Champions of Learning - Golden Learner Awards. Mary was selected to attend a ceremony at the Holiday Inn in Taunton and was awarded runner up. The awards were presented by Toyah Wilcox.

Mary Kennedy said, “My scheme manager Irene took me to the awards. We had a wonderful evening. We had an excellent meal and were all treated just like royalty, it was just lovely.”

Irene Vincent, Scheme Manager at Millbrook Gardens in Castle Cary said, “Mary has done so well, she has told me that her next goal is to learn how to do her banking online. She really does put us all to shame!”
