South Somerset Works completes its first home

24 July 2007

Yeovil-based South Somerset Works recently completed its first new-build project – two bungalows at Riverside in Horton. These properties were officially opened today by County Councillor Derek Nelson and District Councillor Linda Vijeh.

The development consists of two one-bedroom bungalows for rent which exceed current build standards and have achieved an EcoHomes grading of Very Good, which will help minimise the running cost to the residents and the impact to the environment. The homes have been constructed in partnership with various local firms including Tudor Civil Engineering, Peter Warman Construction and Southern Electric Contracting (SEC).

South Somerset Homes has worked hard to ensure the new bungalows have areas for local wildlife. At one of the bungalows a swallow box has been fitted and a bat box has been installed to the other property. There is also an area for slow worms to the rear of the properties.

South Somerset Homes also held a new name competition for the two bungalows that was open to the residents of Riverside Close sheltered scheme. The new name that has been chosen is River Brook Close, which was suggested by Mr and Mrs Poole. A bottle of champagne was presented to the winners of the new name.

Cllr Derek Nelson commented, “I am very proud to open the new bungalows which will join the existing sheltered bungalows in Horton. I’m confident that the residents will enjoy their new homes ”.

Cllr Linda Vijeh has also supported this project “I am very impressed with the impressive bungalows which will be offered for rent, and much needed for the local area. I would like to congratulate South Somerset Works on the project”.

Colin James, Director of Works, South Somerset Works added, “It is very exciting to see the completion of South Somerset Works’ first construction project. We are delighted with how it has gone and look forward to working on more developments in the future. I would also like to thank the residents and staff of Riverside for their cooperation and understanding throughout the project”.
