Residents of South Somerset Homes awarded for
their beautiful gardens

(Chard, Crewkerne, Ilminster and surrounding villages)

South Somerset Homes recently awarded their residents for keeping such beautiful colourful gardens. This is an annual event, which is open to all residents of South Somerset Homes.

This year’s competition attracted over 100 entries in the following categories –

Best Front Garden, Best Back Garden, Best Vegetable Garden, Best Balcony Garden, Best Sheltered Scheme, the Over 80’s Award and the Children’s Colouring Competition.

Jenny Cremer, owner of Chard Garden Centre was the judge and commented, “I thought that it was wonderful how much thought and energy had been put into all of the gardens entered. They all looked splendid and made choosing a winner very difficult.”

A presentation ceremony for all entrants and prize winners took place recently at Muchelney House extra care sheltered housing scheme in Ilminster.

The winners are as follows:

Best Front Garden
1st Ron Holt, Misterton
2nd Pamela Ferraro, Tatworth
3 rd Brian & Margaret Bird, Ilminster

Best Back Garden
JOINT 1 st Nicki O’Reilly, Misterton
JOINT 1 st Geoff & Jose Beck, Ilminster
3 rd Mary Thorne, Horton

Best Vegetable Garden
1st Suzanne Gill, Ilminster
2nd Margaret Hobbs, Horton
3rd Dawn O’Bern, Haselbury Plucknett

Best Scheme Garden
1st Turnpike Green, Misterton
2nd St. Gildas, Chard
3rd Riverside, Horton

Best Over 80’s Award
1st Ron Holt, Misterton
2nd Margaret Hobbs, Horton
3rd Peter Kendall, Horton

Overall Winner
Geoff & Jose Beck, Ilminster

At the 2004 Garden Competition award ceremony June Payne donated the cup in memory of her late husband Roy Payne who was a keen gardener. This is the fourth time that this cup has been presented and it will be held by the winner for one year.

Darrell Jackson, Head of Community Services at South Somerset Homes said, “Many of our tenants take great pride in their gardens and these awards aim to give them some recognition for their hard work in keeping their gardens so beautiful.”
