Tenants of South Somerset Homes awarded for their beautiful gardens
(Yeovil and surrounding villages)

Pictured in the centre is Janet Stone (Tenant Representative) and to the left is Jean Seymour from East Coker who won second prize for Best Theme Garden. Pictured around them are all the other tenants that entered the competition and tenant representatives.

South Somerset Homes recently awarded their tenants for keeping such beautiful colourful gardens. This is an annual event, which is open to all tenants of South Somerset Homes.

This year's competition attracted over 100 entries in the following categories –

Best Front Garden, Best Back Garden, Best Container Garden, Best Theme Garden, Best Feature Garden and Children's Chance.

Steve Fox, a Landscape Officer at South Somerset District Council, was one of the judges and commented, “I thought that all the gardens were marvellous, it was quite incredible how much dedication and hard work had been put into them.”

A presentation ceremony for all the entrants and prize winners took place recently at Malmesbury Court Extra Care Sheltered Housing Scheme in Yeovil.

The winners were as follows:

Best Front Garden
1st Prize – Winifred Atwell, Yeovil
2nd Prize – Janet Lawrence, Yeovil
3rd Prize – Peter Gaylard and Patricia Moss, Yeovil

Best Back Garden
1st Prize – Barry and Lyn Jackson, Yeovil
2nd Prize – Frank and Janet Gifford-England, Barwick
3rd Prize – Gordon Hawkins, Barwick

Best Container Garden
1st Prize – Gordon Hawkins, Barwick
2nd Prize – Frank and Janet Gifford-England, Barwick
3rd Prize – Betty Nash, Yeovil

Best Theme Garden
1st Prize – Yvonne Cooper, Yeovil
2nd Prize – Jean & Garry Seymour, East Coker

Best Feature Garden
1st Prize – Violet Smart, Yeovil

Special Award
Ernie Wood, Yeovil

Special Mention
Queenie Hurford, Yeovil
Frank and Janet Gifford-England, Barwick

Peter Sparks, Housing Manager at South Somerset Homes said, “Many of our tenants take great pride in their gardens and these awards aim to give them some recognition for their hard work in keeping their gardens so beautiful.”
