Northbrook Road, Yeovil Regeneration
The Northbrook Road, Yeovil Regeneration project will be delivered through a number of phases. It is envisaged that the regeneration of this area will take at least
3-5 years to accomplish. The scheme proposals have the support of the Local Authority who has offered limited financial assistance.
Due to the size and nature of the scheme there will be comprehensive public consultation both by means of Open Days, which will explain the broad concepts, and on a one to one basis as schemes become finalised and begin to move forward.
The first Open Day was held in February 2006 at South Somerset Homes Headquarters at Alvington in Yeovil where over 160 residents attended to discuss the plans for the regeneration of this area. As well as residents, South Somerset Homes’ board members, District Councillors and MP David Laws also attended the open day.
Geoff Atkinson, Chief Executive, South Somerset Homes said, “South Somerset Homes is going to invest large sums of money to regenerate not only the bricks and mortar but also it will help the community itself. We can help design out crime, and thereby reduce the fear of crime and, most importantly of all, we can provide more desperately needed affordable homes for local people.
This investment by South Somerset Homes is not only to benefit current residents, it's also for their sons and daughters for the next 50 years.”
The first sites collectively offer the opportunity to house local people in brand new homes which will also make it easier to do major works on other sites as some families will have already moved. The new homes would be built using timber frame construction and materials complementary to those used locally.
This is where we currently are with the site:
Northbrook D1, F & G are on site and demolition is due to start on the garages and flats soon.
F - St John's Road: Garage site to be replaced with 3 Cary's.
G - Northbrook Road: aka Badger site. Demolition of 4 flats and community room to make way for flats.
D1 - Monmouth Road: Grass verge to be built on. Provision of 2 x 2-bedroom bungalows and 6 x1-bedroom bungalows for over 50's.
