Living at an Extra Care scheme

Accommodation

Residents living in an extra care sheltered housing scheme have their own one-bedroom flat or bungalow. All flats or bungalows have a community alarm system to enable residents to call for help in an emergency.

Most extra care schemes have a communal lounge with a kitchen, disabled bathing and laundry facilities and some have a guest bedroom.

Scheme Manager and Carers

The Extra Care Scheme Manager has overall responsibility for the scheme. This means making sure that residents receive services of the highest possible standard, and that communal areas are kept in good order.

A small and dedicated team of carers provide the care that the residents need. The carers work for an agency under contract to Social Services – but the aim will always be that, wherever possible, residents will be looked after by carers, who they know.

Individual Care

Residents' needs are assessed on an individual basis so that we can make sure that each resident receives all the help they need with everyday life. This might include help with getting up in the morning, getting dressed, bathing, cleaning, laundry, collecting prescriptions & pensions and many other small tasks. A cooked midday meal is also provided at some of the schemes (where the need is assessed).

Social Activities

Some schemes have a communal lounge where a number of social activities take place. All residents are very welcome to join in, although there is no obligation to do so.

Costs

Residents pay rent for their flat, a support charge (to cover employment of the Scheme Manager and the cost of the community alarm system) and a service charge (for equipping and heating the communal areas and TV licences).

Financial help may be available to cover the costs of living on a sheltered scheme and you would be given full advice on this.

Eligibility

Eligibility for extra care housing is based on a comprehensive care assessment of each individual. The decision will be made jointly by the Extra Care Scheme Manager, Supported Housing Officer and Social Services.
